Mike Thelin, Moderator  Bolted Services Principal Mike Thelin creates and oversees business development, sponsorship, and marketing for culinary-inspired events across the country. A restaurant critic, former journalist, and regular on-air contributor to the internationally televised show, Unique Eats, Thelin combines his global chef and restaurant expertise with a passion for story-telling to produce such high-profile food events as New York’s Eater Awards, a nationally-focused annual event for Eater.com. He has created programs for Whole Foods Market and the IACP, among others, and his writing has appeared in Portland Monthly and USA Today. Thelin is co-founder of Feast Portland, debuting Downtown on September 20th.
Karen Brooks, Panelist  Karen Brooks has been Portland’s defining voice of dining for over 30 years. She wrote and shaped the restaurant coverage for Willamette Week and the Oregonian. Brooks is the author of eight books on food and pop culture, among them the cult classics Patio Daddy-O and Atomic Cocktails, as well as the 1993 tome, Oregon’s Cuisine of the Rain, a defining early overview of the Northwest Cuisine movement. She has been a guest on the Today Show and NPR’s Splendid Table. Brooks is currently a restaurant critic and food editor at Portland Monthly.
Kurt Huffman, Panelist  Kurt Huffman is Founder of ChefStable, an organization which strives to offer up-and-coming and established chefs the opportunity to build and open their concept in partnership with a group of restaurant business professionals. Prior to starting his business, Huffman ventured to France where he began his first upstart food business, Ninkasi, a French brewpub. When he left in 2004, the brewery had exploded to five locations and 500 employees. Huffman has worked to propel the acclaim of such restaurants as James Beard-nominated Grüner, and Andy Ricker’s Ping, as well as St. JackWafu, and Oven and Shaker, among others.
David Machado, Panelist  David Machado has a restaurant career that spans three decades. He has acted as owner and executive chef of various restaurants, including Pazzo Ristorante, Vindalho, and Lauro Mediterranean Kitchen, which was named the 2004 Willamette Week Restaurant of the Year. In 2009 Machado opened Nel Centro, adjacent to the Hotel Modera, and was named Oregon Restaurateur of Year by the Oregon Restaurant Association. Machado’s work has been chronicled in such publications as Bon Appétit, Esquire, and The New York Times, among others. He has appeared on the Discovery Channel’s Great Chefs, Great Cities, as well as on OPB’s Endless Feasts.
Carrie Welch, Panelist  Carrie Welch is co-owner of Little Green Pickle, a Portland-based PR, social media, and web design company. Prior to starting her own business, Welch spent a decade working at Food Network, where she quickly worked her way up the New York corporate ladder to oversee all consumer press, talent relations, digital PR, social media, and charitable efforts. She successfully launched shows for and managed the careers of such celebrity chefs as Rachael Ray, Bobby Flay, and Paula Deen, among others. Welch helped create the wildly successful New York City Wine & Food Festival, as well as Southern Wines & Spirits.

About Us:

PAF Celebrating 100 year of setting the standard for Creative, Design, and Media Community!

You'd think New York or San Francisco, not Portland, was this country's first club of that kind. In 1906, a group of business and professional leaders put their heads together to form an ad club, establishing Portland as a leader in the creative business community.

Coming into the 21st century, PAF is focusing on its program activity and benefits on explicit member disciplines. PAF programs run throughout the year and have been instrumental in bringing some of the most exciting and innovating thinkers in the business to our region. To name a few: John F. Kennedy, JR. Malcom Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point Chris Riley, Head of Planning, Graphic Design Group, Apple Computer, Inc. Jameel Spence, President of New York-based blue Flame Marketing & Advertising. Neal Stewart, Brand Manager of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Andrew Keller, CB+P, Group Creative Director on MINI. Kevin Carroll, brand evangelist and ESPN show host. John Butler, principal at Butler Shine Stern & Partners, author of Converse Brand Democracy. Joey Carson, CEO of reality television pioneers Buni-Murray Productions.

PAF is member inclusive, including all disciplines in communication arts: advertising agencies, media partners (radio, TV, and print), interactive communication, and client-side marketing professionals. Each Executive Director and each Board of Directors makes their mark on the progress and future of PAF. Current Executive Director Jamie Sexton is working with the Board and Executive Committee on an aggressive market approach for PAF that includes re-branding, value-driven educational programs, new member development, and outreach to the member community.

As the history of PAF is updated each year, a constant appears to be the club's willingness to change with the times. Who knows what the next 100 years will bring?
