Tuesday, January 26, 2010 Brand in Hand: Making iPhone Apps
Brand in Hand — The Pitfalls and Profits of iPhone Apps
The branded iPhone app is the most intimate form of marketing ever devised. Amid the feeding frenzy of 3 billion downloads in just 18 months, consumers have shown they’ll opt-in and even pay to carry brands around in their pockets: 24/7/365. But there’ve been far more failures than successes. Arve Overland and Greg Tozian from Portland’s Overland Agency caution that the old marketing rules still apply, even on a gold-rush platform that allows marketers total freedom to create new ways to sell and lift brands. Don’t go there if you don’t have rock-solid strategies for creating a must-have app, seamless integration and execution, and a plan for tracking and justifying your client’s expenditure after they’re on the iTunes Store. Learn how to determine if this latest marketing strategy is for you and your clients from two people who are now creating successful branded iPhone apps.
Arve Overland is Chief Creative Officer and Greg Tozian is Chief Strategy Officer at the Overland Agency. Arve and Greg are also monthly contributors to the Portland Business Journal column Online Rules.
Join PAF, Arve and Greg for an informative lunchtime download.

About Us:
PAF Celebrating 100 year of setting the standard for the Creative, Design, and Media Community!
You'd think New York or San Francisco, not Portland, was this country's first club of that kind. In 1906, a group of business and professional leaders put their heads together to form an ad club, establishing Portland as a leader in the creative business community. 100 years, at least 76 presidents, and three name changes later, the Portland Advertising Federation, now known as the PAF, is one of the strongest ad clubs in the country.
Coming into the 21st century, PAF is focusing on its program activity and benefits on explicit member disciplines. PAF programs run throughout the year and have been instrumental in bringing some of the most exciting and innovative thinkers in the business to our region. To name a few: John F. Kennedy, JR. Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point Chris Riley, Head of Planning, Graphic Design Group, Apple Computer, Inc. Jameel Spence, President of New York-based Blue Flame Marketing & Advertising. Neal Stewart, Brand Manager of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Andrew Keller, CB+P, Group Creative Director on MINI. Kevin Carroll, brand evangelist and ESPN show host. John Butler, principal at Butler Shine Stern & Partners, author of Converse Brand Democracy. Joey Carson, CEO of reality television pioneers Buni-Murray Productions.
PAF is member inclusive, including all disciplines in communication arts: advertising agencies, media partners (radio, TV, and print), interactive communication, and client-side marketing professionals. Each Executive Director and each Board of Directors makes their mark on the progress and future of PAF. Current Executive Director Jamie Sexton is working with the Board and Executive Committee on an aggressive marketing approach for PAF that includes re-branding, value-driven educational programs, new member development, and outreach to the member community.
As the history of PAF is updated each year, a constant appears to be the club’s willingness to change with the times. Who knows what the next 100 years will bring?
