About Me
Roland Gauthier is a 10 year veteran of the commercial, VFX and film industries. Through his experience as both a supervisor and a solutions-oriented production artist, he offers a potent mix of technical and artistic strengths, creative passion, and collaborative leadership.
In March of 2009, Roland co-founded Hinge Digital, a Portland-based animation and visual effects studio, with two partners, Michael Kuehn, Alex Tysowsky. Between them, they have more than three decades of experience working on feature animation, visual effects films and commercials at studios such as Sony, Disney and Laika, among others. Over the past year, Roland has been producing local and national commercials, and animated web content. In 2010, in addition to commercials, Hinge Digital is targeting longer format work including feature film, television shows, webisodes and games. His prior production roles include Senior Technical Director, visual effects artist, character rigger, pipelines tools developer and character modeler. As a CG Department Head at LAIKA, he managed a crew of 20 regular and project staff, job assignments, budgeting and resource allocation, and defined and directed development of new tools and techniques, as well as internal projects.
He has supervised and contributed to projects for clients including M&M's, Honda, Mini-Wheats, Cheerios, Cox Communications, Ubisoft, Arby's, Wrigley's, Microsoft, Samsung, Dole, Ben and Jerry's, the UN, and Henry Selick's Moongirl. Born in France and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he has a BA in Mass Media and Cultural Identity from Vassar College and a BAS in animation from Expression College for Digital Arts.
