05/19/11 Money for Something: Crowdfunding 4 U
Every start-up project needs funding (like that break-through marketing strategy book you're writing, or that CD collection of the most entertaining jingles you've been part of creating for your clients). We all know it, but what we often struggle with is where to get it?
Today, websites like Kickstarter.com, IndieGoGo, Sellaband and ProFounders are helping folks with great ideas get them off the drafting board, and out of the studios, into the world where they belong. When done right, the pitches of these crowdfunded projects do double duty‚??raising much needed kickoff funding, AND helping build a rabid and committed fan-base for the project owners too.
At Artful Phoenix Studio, we work with creators of original stuff‚??digital entertainment producers, artists, inventors‚??as their marketing and product development arm. Occasionally we partner with a project to do fundraising, and have turned over a lot of stones in the process.
One of our favorites, and the crowdfunding darling of the web today, is Kickstarter. We LOVE this tool for getting projects off the ground and moving forward in a rapid way. I myself have pledged to half a dozen projects that have succeeded, and I can‚??t describe for you the thrill I get seeing people fulfilll their creative dreams in such a powerful, community-oriented way.
We‚??re fortunate to be working with several creators on their Kickstarter campaigns. We‚??ve learned a ton about what works and what doesn‚??t by studying projects that have succeeded and failed. We‚??re also conducting an ongoing quantitative study, as well as interviewing project owners like Kristin, whose projects were successfully funded. (You‚??d be surprised at what goes on behind the scenes to make these projects successful!!)
Out of all our research and growing experience, and my personal commitment to empower indie artists and creators of original things, we developed ‚??Money For Something: Crafting the Perfect Pitch for Kickstarter and Other Crowdfunding Sites.‚?Ě This is a hands-on workshop designed to help creators harness the power of crowdfunding tools.
Joining us as our Special Guests for our first workshop are two Kickstarter project owners: Kristin Zabawa, former zoo keeper turned nature photographer, and Randolph Sellars creator and director of the Vicky Vixen web series and transmedia universe.
Kristin‚??s project was funded last winter which lead to some delightful and unexpected results at Sundance, and Randy is in the midst of his unique campaign, so you‚??ll get an in-the-trenches point-of-view from this comedic maverick whose entertainment products are meant to both entertain and empower his audiences.
So, please visit the workshop page at http://artfulphoenix.com/money4somethingto learn more, register, and share the page.
One final note.
Being one who likes to practice what she preaches, this workshop doubles as a fundraiser for the non-profit arts group, Portland Collage Artists Guild. So, pass this information along to those artists, inventors, product developers you know and let‚??s get their work and ours out in the world where it all truly makes a difference.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

BELOW: Download our PDF flyer for the workshop. We'd seriously love it if you'd print and post it in breakrooms, on bathroom stall doors, or in your favorite coffee shops and cafes. Gosh. we'd love you even more if you e-mailed it to those artists, product designers, and filmmaker friends of yours too! Thank you!
